Chesterfield County Veterans

Confederate Veterans
of
Chesterfield County, Virginia

1861-1865

Compiled by Edwin Ray

Additions by William Rose and Ruth D. Snead

Introduction

In honor of all those brave Virginians who struggled in defense of the constitutional rights handed down to them by God and their forefathers, the following roster has been compiled. This roster contains the names of more than eighteen hundred soldiers, sailors, marines, and slaves who at one time or another were born in, lived, or are buried in Chesterfield County. They served in those artillery, cavalry and infantry units raised from within the county, of course, but also in many other units or ships.

In order to accentuate the positive and be as inclusive as possible, individuals who performed any significant amount of honorable service are included even if at some later time they may have deserted or been court martialed. In other words I have elected to give the benefit of the doubt and emphasize the honorable service and minimize those activities that may or may not have been less than honorable. On the other hand, those rare individuals who deserted to the enemy or reported for duty only in response to a bounty or conscription notice and then disappeared within days, are not included.

"The Confederate soldiers were our kinfolk and our heroes. We testify to the country our enduring fidelity to their memory. We commemorate their valor and devotion. There were some things that were not surrendered at Appomattox. We did not surrender our rights in history, nor was it one of the conditions of surrender that unfriendly lips should be suffered to tell The story of that war or that unfriendly hands should write the epitaphs of the Confederate dead. We have a right to teach our children the true history of that war, the causes that led up to it, and the principles involved."

Tennessee Senator Edward W. Carmack, 1903
